Short answer: MUD\WTR, which most people type as "mud water", is a real brand with a clear idea: a warm drink to replace coffee, built on cacao and masala chai with four mushrooms, at 35 mg of caffeine a serving, about a third of the 100 mg in a scoop of Alphacino12. In 2026 it also sells an actual coffee, MUD\WTR Coffee, made from arabica and decaf with the same four mushrooms, L-theanine and 45 mg of caffeine1. Both print a total for their mushroom blend, 2,240 and 2,250 mg, and both ingredient statements say the blend is "mushroom and mycelium cultured on organic oats and/or organic sorghum", which means part of that weight is the grain the mycelium grew on; the label does not say how much1. Both cost $50 for 30 servings, $1.67 a cup1. Read against the trials, the mushrooms are at amounts that have not been tested, the caffeine in the Original is a withdrawal dose for a coffee drinker, and the honest verdict is that MUD\WTR is a pleasant, low-caffeine ritual for people who have decided to quit coffee, not a cheaper way to get what coffee does. Below: every product and what is on its label, the caffeine, the mushroom maths, side effects, MUD\WTR vs RYZE, and the comparison with Alphacino, which goes the other way: full caffeine, one mushroom, every dose printed2.

What is MUD\WTR?

MUD\WTR sells its drinks from mudwtr.com as "superfunctional" rituals for the morning, afternoon and evening. The product that made the brand is now called Original, or :rise Cacao: a powder of cacao, a masala chai spice blend, black tea and four mushrooms that you stir into hot water or milk and drink instead of coffee1. The brand's own description is "a fraction of the caffeine of coffee" with "ayurvedic herbs, adaptogens, and cacao", for people who were "sick of the jitters"1.

The range has grown around that tin. On 19 October 2026 the store listed, among a long catalogue of bundles and merchandise1:

  • Original (:rise Cacao): the cacao and chai drink, 35 mg of caffeine.
  • Coffee: new, and an actual coffee: arabica and Swiss Water decaf with the same mushrooms and added L-theanine, 45 mg of caffeine.
  • Matcha: 55 mg of caffeine, with a 3,000 mg mushroom blend.
  • Turmeric and Rest (a rooibos blend): caffeine-free, for the afternoon and evening.
  • Mushroom Boost: a caffeine-free powder of several mushrooms, 3 g a teaspoon, $25 for 30.
  • Plus a protein powder, a hot chocolate, a pumpkin spice latte, creamers and sweeteners.

The core drinks are $50 for a 30-serving tin, $1.67 a serving, or $1.33 to $1.34 on a subscription that ships every four weeks; a 90-serving bag is $1251. The refund policy is stricter than most of the category: no refunds on opened tins, and none for any reason more than 30 days after purchase1.

MUD\WTR ingredients: what the labels say

Both main drinks carry a Nutrition Facts panel, the food-style label, with a caffeine line and a single "Mushroom Blend" line added1.

Line Original (:rise Cacao) MUD\WTR Coffee
Serving 1 tablespoon, 6 g; 30 a tin 1 tablespoon, 5 g; 30 a tin
Base Organic cacao, black tea powder, a seven-spice chai blend (cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves), Himalayan pink salt Organic Swiss Water decaf coffee and organic coffee
Mushroom blend 2,240 mg: chaga, reishi, lion's mane and cordyceps, "mushrooms and mycelium cultured on organic oats and/or organic sorghum" 2,250 mg: lion's mane, cordyceps, reishi and chaga, "mushroom and mycelium cultured on organic oats and/or organic sorghum"
Caffeine 35 mg 45 mg
L-theanine "Natural L-theanine" from the tea; no amount From green tea extract; the brand's comparison graphic says 125 mg
Calories 20, with 1 g of fibre 20
Sugar 0 g 0 g
Certification USDA organic USDA organic

These are clean lists. There is no sugar, no creamer in the tin, and nothing you would object to as an ingredient. What the labels leave out is the split: the mushroom line is one number for four species. US food labels list ingredients in descending order by weight3, and the order gives a hint: in the Original's ingredient statement chaga is listed first and lion's mane third; in the Coffee's, lion's mane is first1.

"Mushroom and mycelium cultured on oats": what that means

This is the line to read twice. Mycelium is the root-like network a mushroom grows from. Grown on grain, it is harvested together with the oats or sorghum it grew through, so a "mycelium on grain" ingredient is partly mushroom tissue and partly the grain it is attached to. The MUD\WTR labels say the blend contains both mushrooms and grain-grown mycelium and do not say in what proportion1, so the 2,240 mg figure is the weight of the blend, not the weight of mushroom. The difference between fruiting body and mycelium extracts, and why brands like Four Sigmatic make a point of it, is explained in what is mushroom coffee.

MUD\WTR's comparison graphics state "560 mg lion's mane" for the Original and "562 mg" for the Coffee1. Those figures appear on the marketing images, not on the Nutrition Facts panels, and they do not say whether the 560 mg is mushroom, mycelium on grain, or an extract. We report them as the brand's claims.

Does MUD\WTR work? Each ingredient against the trials

Ingredient What human trials found Amount tested In MUD\WTR
Lion's mane Better cognitive scores than placebo from week 8 in adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment4; faster performance on one task after a single dose and a trend to lower stress after 28 days in young adults5; no overall change 90 minutes after one dose of extract6 3 g a day for 16 weeks; 1.8 g a day for 28 days; 3 g of a 10:1 extract once Part of a 2,240 mg blend; the brand claims 560 mg
Cordyceps Higher metabolic and ventilatory thresholds after 12 weeks in 20 adults aged 50 to 75, with no change in VO2max7; better time to exhaustion after 1 and 3 weeks and higher VO2max after 3 weeks in 28 young adults8; no effect on aerobic capacity or a time trial in 22 trained cyclists after 5 weeks9 1 g a day of Cs-4; 4 g a day of a blend; 3 g a day of Cs-4 Part of the blend; amount not printed
Chaga No human trial on energy, focus or immunity that we could find None Listed first on the Original
Reishi No human trial on energy or focus that we could find None Part of the blend
Caffeine Better alertness, vigilance, attention and reaction time across about 40 to 300 mg10 About 40 to 300 mg 35 mg (Original), 45 mg (Coffee)
L-theanine with caffeine Better task-switching accuracy and alertness with 97 mg theanine and 40 mg caffeine11 97 mg with 40 mg Coffee: 125 mg claimed with 45 mg; Original: no amount

Three things stand out. First, the mushroom trials that found effects used grams a day of a single species; MUD\WTR's whole four-species blend is 2.2 g, and part of that is grain. Second, cordyceps has the most relevant trials for a "natural energy" claim, and the results are mixed: positive at 1 g a day in older adults and 4 g a day in young adults, nothing in trained cyclists. Third, the only ingredient in MUD\WTR at a dose with reliable same-day effects is caffeine, and the Original sits just below the bottom of its tested range. If you drink MUD\WTR Coffee, the theanine-and-caffeine pairing is the one line on the label that matches a trial.

How much caffeine is in MUD\WTR?

By the brand's own panels: 35 mg in the Original, 45 mg in the Coffee, 55 mg in the Matcha, and zero in Rest and Turmeric1. For scale, a scoop of Alphacino is 100 mg2, and the caffeine literature's useful range starts at about 40 mg10.

That number cuts both ways. If you are quitting coffee, 35 mg is a gentle step down. If you drink two or three coffees a day and switch to MUD\WTR expecting the same morning, you will be dropping from 200 or 300 mg to 35, and caffeine withdrawal is real and well mapped: headache in about half of people, plus fatigue, drowsiness, low mood, poor concentration and a foggy head, starting 12 to 24 hours after the last dose, peaking at 20 to 51 hours and lasting 2 to 9 days, with symptoms seen after habitual doses as low as 100 mg a day12. The first week on MUD\WTR is often that, not the mushrooms. The brand's own "what to expect" image says the same thing in kinder words: improvements "don't happen overnight", with "more balanced energy" at one to two weeks1. The full picture by brand is in how much caffeine is in mushroom coffee.

What does MUD\WTR taste like?

The Original tastes like what it is: unsweetened cacao with chai spices, earthy and a little bitter, closer to a spiced hot chocolate than to coffee. The brand sells it hot or iced, frothed, and with its own coconut creamer and sweetener, which are separate purchases1. Coffee drinkers tend to split: some like the ritual, many miss the coffee. The new Coffee product is the brand's answer to the second group. If it is the spiced-cacao taste you want but you would rather keep a real coffee, the mocha and cinnamon recipes in how to make mushroom coffee taste good get close.

MUD\WTR side effects

  • Caffeine withdrawal is the most common complaint in the first week, for the reason above12. Taper over a week or two rather than switching overnight.
  • Chaga is listed first on the Original's blend. Chaga is very high in oxalate, and kidney damage has been reported in a woman taking 4 to 5 teaspoons of chaga powder a day for six months13, far more than a tin holds, but people with kidney stones or kidney disease should know it is there.
  • Reishi. Liver injury has been reported with a reishi formulation taken as a supplement14; again not at drink doses, but worth knowing.
  • Grain. The mycelium is cultured on oats and sorghum1. Oats are not wheat, but if you are strictly gluten-free, ask the brand about its sourcing.
  • Sleep. At 35 mg the Original is low enough that evening use is unlikely to cost sleep for most people; a full coffee wants to be 8.8 hours before bed15, which is the argument for the brand's caffeine-free Rest in the evening and for keeping any full-caffeine cup to the morning.
  • Pregnancy. The mushroom extracts have not been tested in pregnancy; ask your doctor.

More on all of these, for every brand, is in mushroom coffee side effects.

MUD\WTR vs RYZE

The two are compared constantly, and MUD\WTR's own product pages compare themselves with RYZE directly1. Here are both on the same lines, with RYZE's figures from its own listings as read for our RYZE review16.

MUD\WTR Original MUD\WTR Coffee RYZE
What it is Cacao and chai, not coffee Arabica and decaf coffee Instant arabica with coconut milk and MCT oil

Price, 30 servings $50, $1.67 a cup $50, $1.67 a cup $45, $1.50 a cup

If you want to quit coffee, MUD\WTR Original is the more honest of the two about being a replacement: it does not pretend to be coffee. If you want a mild, creamy coffee, RYZE and MUD\WTR Coffee are close on caffeine; MUD\WTR prints a mushroom total and a theanine claim, RYZE prints neither, and RYZE is cheaper with a real refund window. Neither prints a lion's mane dose on its panel.

Where MUD\WTR wins. It is certified organic. It is the only one of the three that is not coffee at all, which is the whole point if you are quitting. It prints a total mushroom weight, which RYZE does not. It is cheaper than Alphacino on a subscription. And it has a wider range, with caffeine-free evening drinks.

Where Alphacino wins. Every dose is printed on its own line, and its lion's mane is a fruiting-body extract with no mycelium or grain in the weight2. It carries 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha, the dose that lowered stress scores and cortisol against placebo over 60 days17, which no MUD\WTR drink contains. Its 100 mg of caffeine is inside the tested range and is paired with a printed 100 mg of L-theanine. And you can open it, drink it for two months and still send it back.

Who should pick which

MUD\WTR Original if you have decided to quit or cut coffee, you like cacao and chai, and you want a warm morning ritual to replace the cup. Taper your caffeine first so the first week is not withdrawal.

MUD\WTR Coffee if you want a mild coffee with theanine and the brand's mushrooms, and you are happy with a blend total rather than a dose.

Alphacino if you want to keep a full cup of coffee and have it carry ingredients at doses with trials behind them: the full KSM-66 dose for stress, L-theanine against the caffeine, and a lion's mane extract at a printed 500 mg. Judge the ashwagandha at eight weeks17, not at eight days.

Where Alphacino fits

The Alphacino Supplement Facts panel: KSM-66 ashwagandha 600 mg, HericiumPrime lion's mane fruiting body extract 500 mg, black maca 224 mg, L-theanine 100 mg, caffeine 100 mg and S7 blend 50 mg per 4.42 g scoop
Alphacino's panel: one line per ingredient, one amount per line. No blend totals.

We do not make a coffee alternative, and we are not trying to talk anyone out of quitting coffee; if that is the goal, MUD\WTR is a reasonable way to do it. Alphacino is for the other decision. It is an instant robusta coffee at 100 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine, 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha, 500 mg of lion's mane fruiting-body extract, 224 mg of black maca and 50 mg of S7, every amount printed, at 10 calories2. It is $49.97 for 30 cups with a 60-day money-back guarantee, long enough to run the eight-week ashwagandha test. How the rest of the category reads on the same label test is in the best mushroom coffee ranking, the switch from regular coffee is covered in mushroom coffee vs regular coffee, and the tub is on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is MUD\WTR actually coffee?

The Original is not: it is cacao, masala chai spices, black tea and four mushrooms, at 35 mg of caffeine. MUD\WTR Coffee, launched alongside it, is a real coffee made from arabica and Swiss Water decaf with the same mushrooms and added L-theanine, at 45 mg.

How much caffeine is in MUD\WTR?

35 mg a serving in the Original, from black tea; 45 mg in MUD\WTR Coffee; 55 mg in the Matcha; none in Rest or Turmeric. A scoop of Alphacino is 100 mg.

What mushrooms are in MUD\WTR?

Lion's mane, cordyceps, reishi and chaga, printed as one blend of 2,240 mg in the Original and 2,250 mg in the Coffee. The ingredient statement says the blend is mushroom and mycelium cultured on organic oats or sorghum, so part of that weight is grain. The brand's graphics claim about 560 mg of lion's mane.

Does MUD\WTR give you energy?

Mostly through 35 mg of caffeine, which is below the roughly 40 mg where caffeine's effects on alertness begin in the research. The cordyceps trials used 1 to 4 g a day of a single species, more than the whole blend. For a regular coffee drinker, the first week is usually caffeine withdrawal, not energy.

Is MUD\WTR good for you?

It is a clean, organic, sugar-free drink with 20 calories, and a sensible way to cut caffeine. Its mushrooms are at amounts below the trials, chaga is high in oxalate, and the first week off coffee can bring headaches and fatigue. It is not a treatment for anything.

MUD\WTR vs RYZE: which is better?

For quitting coffee, MUD\WTR Original, which does not pretend to be coffee. For a mild creamy coffee, they are close: RYZE is 48 mg and $1.50 a cup with a 30-day money-back guarantee; MUD\WTR Coffee is 45 mg and $1.67, prints a mushroom total and a theanine claim, and refunds only unopened tins within 30 days.

How much does MUD\WTR cost?

$50 for a 30-serving tin of the Original, Coffee, Matcha, Rest or Turmeric, which is $1.67 a serving, or about $1.33 on a four-weekly subscription. A 90-serving bag is $125. Mushroom Boost is $25 for 30.

MUD\WTR or Alphacino?

MUD\WTR if you are quitting coffee and want a cacao and chai ritual. Alphacino if you want a full cup of coffee with every dose printed: 100 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine, 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha and 500 mg of lion's mane extract, with a 60-day guarantee. We make Alphacino.
