Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee Review: Focus, Original, Pods and Decaf, Label by Label, and How It Compares With Alphacino

Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee reviewed from its own labels: what is in Focus ground, instant and pods and the reformulated Original, the caffeine in each, the lion's mane amounts the labels leave out, price per cup, side effects, Four Sigmatic vs RYZE, and the comparison with Alphacino. The Nitric Oxide Blend, Its Seven Plants, the 50 mg Dose and What the Studies Show

Short answer: Four Sigmatic is a real, well-established brand selling organic arabica coffee with mushroom extracts, and its main coffee line, Focus, is coffee with lion's mane: ground at about 150 mg of caffeine per 12 oz cup, instant packets at 50 mg, and Keurig-compatible pods at 72 to 88 mg, at about $1.50 a cup1. What none of the Focus labels tells you is how much lion's mane is in the cup. They carry a Nutrition Facts panel that lists lion's mane and chaga as ingredients with no amounts. The reformulated Original Mushroom Coffee does print a figure, 1,500 mg of five mushrooms combined, with no split1. Read against the trials, which used 1.8 to 3 g of lion's mane a day23, that makes Four Sigmatic a good organic coffee with some mushroom in it rather than a mushroom supplement in a mug. Below: every product line and what is in it, the caffeine in each, the price per cup, side effects, Four Sigmatic against RYZE, and the honest comparison with Alphacino, which prints every dose on the tub4.

What is Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee?

Four Sigmatic is a California brand founded by the Finnish entrepreneur Tero Isokauppila, and by its own account the company that started the mushroom coffee category about ten years ago; it says it has sold more than 400 million cups1. The brand says its products are USDA certified organic, and it makes a point of using extracts of the mushroom's fruiting body, the part you would recognise as a mushroom, rather than mycelium grown on grain1. Why that distinction matters is explained in what is mushroom coffee.

The range is wide. On 18 October 2026 the store listed more than 30 coffee products1. The ones people search for fall into a few families:

  • Focus, the lion's mane line: ground coffee in dark and medium roasts, whole bean, instant packets, a 30-serving instant bag, and pods for Keurig machines, plus half caf, high caf and decaf versions.
  • Original Mushroom Coffee, the reformulated version of the brand's first product: an instant coffee with five mushrooms, a probiotic and vitamin B12.
  • Calm and Gut Health: decaf and half caf coffees with reishi and chaga, and coffees with turkey tail and prebiotic fibre.
  • Extras: protein coffee, creamers, lattes and mushroom blends without coffee.

Four Sigmatic offers a 60-day money-back guarantee and a subscription at 30% off the first order and 20% off after that1.

Four Sigmatic ingredients: the labels, product by product

We read the labels from the brand's own product images where it shows them, and the product listings where it does not. This is what is in the cup:

Product What the label lists Serving Mushroom amount printed?
Focus Ground Coffee, Dark Organic coffee, organic lion's mane extract, organic chaga extract 4 tablespoons (21 g); about 13 servings in a 10 oz bag No
Focus Ground Coffee, Medium Organic coffee with lion's mane (the listing names lion's mane only) As above No
Focus Instant Coffee packets Organic instant coffee, organic lion's mane extract, organic chaga extract, organic rhodiola extract One 2.5 g packet; 10 a box No
Focus Coffee Pods Organic dark roast coffee with lion's mane One pod; 24 a box No
Focus Half Caf Ground Organic coffee, organic decaf coffee, organic lion's mane extract, organic yacon powder 4 tablespoons (21 g); about 13 servings No
Original Mushroom Coffee Organic instant coffee and coconut milk powder; turkey tail, lion's mane, reishi, chaga and cordyceps fruiting body extracts; yacon root and the probiotic Bacillus subtilis DE111; vitamin B12 One tablespoon (6 g); 30 a bag As a blend: 1,500 mg for all five mushrooms

All of these are clean, short ingredient lists. The Focus labels we read show no sugar, and there is nothing on any of them that you would object to as an ingredient. The Original adds 30 calories and 1.5 g of saturated fat a cup from its coconut milk powder, and a stated 500 million CFU of a named probiotic strain1.

Why the Focus labels show no mushroom amounts

The Focus coffees are labelled as foods, with a Nutrition Facts panel, so the label lists ingredients but not how much of each. The Original is labelled as a dietary supplement, with a Supplement Facts panel, and US rules let a supplement group ingredients into a named blend and print only the blend's total weight, with the ingredients listed in descending order by weight5. That is what "Organic Mushroom Blend 1,500 mg" is.

The descending order tells you something. Turkey tail is listed first and lion's mane second1, so lion's mane can be at most half the blend, 750 mg, and every mushroom after it less again. Nothing on either label is hidden in a misleading way. It just means that if you are buying Four Sigmatic for the lion's mane, you cannot find out from the label how much you are getting.

Does Four Sigmatic work? Each ingredient against the trials

The question to ask of any mushroom coffee is whether the cup carries the ingredient at an amount that has been tested in people. Here is how Four Sigmatic's ingredients line up.

Ingredient What human trials found Amount tested In a cup of Four Sigmatic
Lion's mane Better cognitive scores than placebo in adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment from week 8 of 16, falling back 4 weeks after stopping3; better scores on one of three cognitive tests over 12 weeks in healthy adults over 506; faster performance on one task and a trend to lower stress in young adults2 3 g a day for 16 weeks; 3.2 g a day for 12 weeks; 1.8 g a day for 28 days Not printed in Focus; at most 750 mg in the Original
Lion's mane, single dose No overall effect on cognition or mood 90 minutes after one dose, with one test improved7 3 g of a 10:1 extract Not printed
Chaga No human trial on energy, focus or mood that we could find None Not printed
Rhodiola (Focus Instant) Not reviewed here; the packet does not say how much it holds Not printed
Caffeine The one active with a dose on every Focus product 50 to about 150 mg, by product

Lion's mane has the best human evidence of any coffee mushroom, and it is real. But every positive trial used grams a day. A 2.5 g instant packet, which also has to hold the coffee, cannot hold 1.8 g of mushroom, and the Original's whole five-mushroom blend is 1.5 g. Four Sigmatic says you can see results "in as little as 7 days"1. In the trials, the improvements in older adults appeared from week 8 of daily use3, and the single-dose studies in young adults found faster performance on one task but no overall change27. In the first week, what you will notice is the coffee.

That is not a reason to avoid Four Sigmatic. It is a reason to buy it as what it is: an organic coffee you like, with a mushroom in it, not a dosed lion's mane supplement. If lion's mane is the thing you want, the amount matters, and our lion's mane coffee guide compares the printed amounts across brands.

How much caffeine is in Four Sigmatic?

Product Caffeine, the brand's figure
Focus Ground Coffee About 150 mg per 12 oz cup, "about the same as regular coffee"
Focus Coffee Pods 72 to 88 mg a pod
Focus Instant Coffee packets 50 mg
Original Mushroom Coffee About 50 mg, described as half-caf
Focus Half Caf Ground "Half caf", no figure given
Calm Decaf and Focus Decaf Pods Decaf, Swiss Water process

The spread is the thing to notice: the same Focus name covers a 50 mg instant and a brewed cup three times that strength1. For scale, USDA data put an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee at about 95 mg8, and a scoop of Alphacino is 100 mg4. European food safety authorities found no safety concern for healthy adults up to 400 mg a day9, and to protect sleep, a cup of coffee is best finished at least 8.8 hours before bed10. None of the Focus coffees contains L-theanine, the amino acid that, at 97 mg with 40 mg of caffeine, improved attention on a demanding task and reduced tiredness in a controlled trial11. Brand-by-brand caffeine figures are in how much caffeine is in mushroom coffee.

Four Sigmatic K-cups, decaf and half caf

Pods. Focus Coffee Pods are organic dark roast coffee with lion's mane, sold 24 to a box for $36, which is $1.50 a pod, and the brand says they work in Keurig K-Cup machines including 2.0 brewers1. At 72 to 88 mg of caffeine they sit between the instant and the brewed bag. There are high caf and decaf pods too.

Decaf. Four Sigmatic decaffeinates with the Swiss Water process, which the brand describes as chemical-free1. Calm Decaf Ground pairs it with reishi and chaga; Focus Decaf Pods carry lion's mane. As with the rest of the range, no mushroom amounts are printed.

Half caf. Focus Half Caf Ground mixes regular and decaf coffee with lion's mane and yacon, a root used as a prebiotic fibre1. The brand does not give a caffeine number for it.

Our best mushroom coffee ranking compares price per cup across seven brands.

Four Sigmatic side effects

For most people, the side effects of Four Sigmatic are the side effects of coffee. Caffeine raises anxiety in healthy people, more so at high doses; in a meta-analysis the rise was much larger above 400 mg a day12. The 150 mg brewed cup counts toward that total faster than the 50 mg instant does, and late cups cost sleep10.

The mushrooms are at small amounts, but they are worth knowing about:

  • Lion's mane. A 2025 systematic review lists stomach discomfort, headache and allergic reactions as possible, though rarely reported, side effects13.
  • Chaga. Chaga is very high in oxalate. A published case of kidney damage involved a woman taking 4 to 5 teaspoons of chaga powder a day for six months14, far more than a cup of coffee carries, but people with kidney stones or kidney disease should know it is there. Focus Dark, Focus Instant, Calm Decaf and the Original contain it1.
  • Reishi (Calm and the Original). Liver injury has been reported with a reishi formulation15, taken as a supplement rather than in coffee.
  • Pregnancy. The mushroom extracts have not been tested in pregnancy, so ask your doctor, both about them and about how much caffeine is right for you.

More on all of these, for every brand, is in mushroom coffee side effects.

Four Sigmatic vs RYZE

The two best-known mushroom coffees are built differently. Figures for RYZE are from its own listings as read in our RYZE review.

Four Sigmatic Original Four Sigmatic Focus RYZE
Format Instant with coconut milk Ground, instant or pods Instant with coconut milk and MCT oil
Caffeine About 50 mg 50 to about 150 mg 48 mg
Mushrooms Five, 1,500 mg combined Lion's mane, often chaga; amount not printed Six; amount not printed
Extras Probiotic, B12 Rhodiola in the instant MCT oil
Price a cup $1.66 About $1.50 $1.50
Guarantee 60 days 60 days 30 days

If you want a creamy, low-caffeine instant, Four Sigmatic Original and RYZE are close, and the Original at least prints a total mushroom weight and a named probiotic. If you want a regular cup of coffee, Focus is the one of the two that gives you one. Neither prints a lion's mane dose.

Where Four Sigmatic wins. It is certified organic throughout. It gives you real ground coffee and pods if you like to brew, at a lower price per cup on the larger bags. It has a decaf and a half caf. And it is a brand with ten years and hundreds of millions of cups behind it1.

Where Alphacino wins. Every dose is printed, so you know what you are drinking. It carries 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha, the dose that lowered stress scores and cortisol against placebo over 60 days16, which no Four Sigmatic coffee contains. It pairs its caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine4. And its lion's mane is a stated 500 mg of extract. That is still below the gram amounts of the trials, which no coffee reaches, ours included, but it is a number you can hold us to.

Who should pick which

Four Sigmatic Focus if you want organic coffee you brew yourself, in a bag or a pod, you like the idea of lion's mane in it, and you are happy not to know the amount. Choose the instant or the half caf if you want less caffeine.

Four Sigmatic Original if you want a mild, creamy instant with a probiotic, and a total mushroom weight on the label.

Alphacino if you are a man who wants a full cup of coffee carrying ingredients at doses with trials behind them: the full KSM-66 dose for stress, L-theanine against the caffeine, and every amount on the tub. Judge the ashwagandha at eight weeks, which is how long its trial ran, not at seven days.

Where Alphacino fits

A jar of Alphacino robusta mushroom coffee on a plain white background
One tub, 30 scoops, every dose printed on the back.

We do not make an organic ground coffee, and we will not pretend Alphacino is one. It is an instant robusta coffee built around the question this review keeps asking: how much of each ingredient is in the cup? Each scoop prints its answer: 100 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine, 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha, 500 mg of lion's mane fruiting-body extract, 224 mg of black maca and 50 mg of S7, at 10 calories4. It is $49.97 for 30 cups with a 60-day money-back guarantee, which covers the eight weeks the ashwagandha needs. The evidence for each ingredient is in KSM-66 ashwagandha for men, lion's mane for men and what S7 is, and the tub is on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee good?

It is good organic coffee with mushroom extracts in it, from a brand with a long track record and a 60-day guarantee. The Focus labels do not print how much lion's mane is in a cup, and the Original prints only a 1,500 mg total for five mushrooms, so it is best bought as coffee you enjoy rather than as a dosed supplement.

How much caffeine is in Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee?

By the brand's figures: about 150 mg per 12 oz cup of Focus Ground, 72 to 88 mg per Focus pod, 50 mg per Focus Instant packet and about 50 mg per serving of Original Mushroom Coffee. The half caf has no stated figure, and the decafs are Swiss Water decaffeinated.

How much lion's mane is in Four Sigmatic?

The Focus coffees do not say: their labels list lion's mane as an ingredient with no amount. The Original lists 1,500 mg of five mushrooms combined, with lion's mane second after turkey tail, which puts lion's mane at 750 mg or less. The human trials used 1.8 to 3 g a day.

Does Four Sigmatic have side effects?

Mostly the side effects of coffee: jitters, anxiety at high caffeine intakes and poor sleep if drunk late. Lion's mane can occasionally cause stomach upset or allergy, and chaga is high in oxalate, which matters if you have kidney stones or kidney disease.

Is Four Sigmatic better than RYZE?

They suit different people. RYZE and Four Sigmatic Original are both mild, creamy instants at about 50 mg of caffeine; the Original prints a total mushroom weight and has a 60-day guarantee against RYZE's 30. Four Sigmatic Focus is the choice if you want a full cup of brewed coffee or pods.

Are Four Sigmatic K-cups good?

Focus Coffee Pods are organic dark roast coffee with lion's mane, 72 to 88 mg of caffeine a pod, at $1.50 a pod, and work in Keurig K-Cup machines including 2.0. As with the bags, the amount of lion's mane is not printed.

Is Four Sigmatic organic?

Yes, according to the brand: its coffees and mushroom extracts are USDA certified organic, and it uses fruiting body extracts rather than mycelium.

Four Sigmatic or Alphacino?

Four Sigmatic if you want certified organic coffee you brew yourself, including decaf and pods. Alphacino if you want a full cup of coffee with every dose printed, 600 mg of KSM-66 ashwagandha for stress and 100 mg of L-theanine with the caffeine. We make Alphacino.
