Short answer: cordyceps coffee is coffee blended with extract of the cordyceps mushroom, marketed for energy and endurance. The honest evidence: two small human trials showed better exercise tolerance (one in adults over 50, one with Cordyceps militaris in younger adults), and two trials in trained cyclists showed nothing. It is an endurance ingredient with mixed, early evidence, not an energy switch. Here is what the studies actually found, the doses they used, and how to decide whether you need it in your cup.
What is cordyceps coffee?
Cordyceps is a fungus with a long history in Chinese practice, famous for growing on caterpillars in the wild. Nobody is drinking that: supplements use cultivated forms, mainly the CS-4 strain of Cordyceps sinensis and lab-grown Cordyceps militaris. Blended into coffee, the pitch is "energy from the mushroom, not just the caffeine".
The claimed mechanism is improved oxygen use and ATP production. That framing comes mostly from cell and animal studies; the human picture is thinner and worth reading before you pay a premium for it.
The human evidence, all of it
- Positive, older adults: in a double-blind trial of healthy adults aged 50 to 75, twelve weeks of Cs-4 improved metabolic and ventilatory thresholds versus placebo, meaning subjects tolerated exercise better before fatiguing.1
- Partly positive, younger adults: a placebo-controlled trial of a Cordyceps militaris blend found improved tolerance to high-intensity exercise after three weeks of daily use, with the acute (single-dose) effects mostly not significant.2
- Null, trained cyclists: five weeks of Cs-4 in competitive cyclists did not improve endurance performance,3 and a cordyceps-based herbal formula likewise showed no benefit in a similar population.4
Read together: the signal appears in untrained or older people over weeks of daily use, and disappears in trained athletes. If that pattern holds, the men most likely to notice cordyceps are the ones getting back into training, not the ones already fit. Nothing here supports same-day energy: for that, the caffeine in the cup remains the evidence-backed ingredient.5

Doses: the studies vs the scoop
The positive trials used 3 to 4 grams of cordyceps per day, taken daily for 3 to 12 weeks. Most cordyceps coffees contain a fraction of that, often inside a multi-mushroom blend that lists only a combined total. The same label test we apply to everything applies here: if the milligrams of cordyceps per serving aren't printed, assume the dose is decorative. At typical blend levels, you are buying the word, not the studied amount.

Do you need cordyceps in your coffee?
Honestly: it is the most skippable of the popular mushroom-coffee ingredients. That is why Alphacino doesn't contain it.
